Then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein “pushed aggressively to expand the practice” of zero-tolerance that led to over 5,000 child separations; 545 families may never be reunited
How long do we watch the wheels of
justice make a show of spinning, and
at what cost do we take matters into
our hands? Do not confuse a disavowal of
violence with kindness. I don’t love you;
forgiveness is not my aim. I want you
prosecuted with as much love as the
toddlers you put on trial. If only your
crime were selling an ounce of weed
or stealing a Happy Meal like the
American Jean Valjean, I could rest
easy, your conviction assured—you
might even escort yourself to the
cages you kept warm with children
my son’s age, wrap yourself in mylar.
But that’s not your equity, is it, Sir?
That’s not how it works in America,
is it, Sir? Here we reward the worst
crimes with a cushy job at a White Shoe
law firm that does pro bono work for the
ACLU. How hard will I work to get you fired?
Who will bear the shame, and will it matter?
O, even as I promise you won’t get away with it,
America, optimistic as ever, spoils to move on.
