Everything I thought I’d cleaned is filthy.
I scrub the floors until they sparkle, then
bleed. I smear the blood all over windows,
dishes, even my car. Blood and dust are
everywhere, worst of all in my eyes and
lungs. They say I should breathe deeply,
see the big picture, fight on. How naïve
of me to think rest was possible in a world
where one person has so much power for
good or evil. Now I’m too tired even to nap.

On days such as this you’ll find me reaching
into every nook and cranny, tidying up as though
I had it in me to put things where they belong.
