The steam began to billow,
The engine howl,
The air to vibrate and scowl,
The sun to emerge from below
To erase shadows, cast doubts,
Cleave good from bad,
Stir the lover and the lout.
Time heals all wounds
And makes normal the insane,
The abhorrent, the terrifying;

The first step to tyranny is blame
Laced with fear:
Immigrants, minorities, The Other—
All who stand between the masses
And the glory of yesteryear,
When all was simple and all were tame.
As the nation went insane
I hid behind outrage;
I gathered logic like kindling;
I laughed and shouted and shook my head;
As we move closer to the November presidential election Donald Trump’s comments are becoming more and more outlandish, irrational, and dangerous. I therefore am calling on all rational people to do everything they can to stop this demagogue in his tracks.
The shooting in Orlando has exposed a deep and underlying ugliness in America, one that is defined by partisanship, hatred, racism, and intolerance. Unfortunately, no political party has a monopoly on purity, and in this post I explore how the horrible massacre of 50 people in a night club speaks to a much bigger problem. I’m too much in shock and sadness to come to any conclusions, so don’t expect that from this post. View it instead as a rambling meditation on the present state of affairs.
